Establishing Market Ecosystem
Establishing Market Ecosystem
Establishing a robust market ecosystem is a critical component of the APC programme, aimed at ensuring better market access and fair price realisation for smallholder farmers. Through synchronised production of market-preferred crops using a cluster-based approach, PGs generate substantial marketable surpluses, creating opportunities to strengthen existing market channels and establish linkages with new buyers and markets.
The programme promotes synchronised harvesting and village-level aggregation, followed by appropriate primary processing, including sorting, grading and packaging according to market requirements. These practices, combined with consistent supply and improved produce quality, enhance the competitiveness of PGs and facilitate access to both local and off-state markets. Collective marketing also improves transparency in transactions, supports timely payments and strengthens farmers’ bargaining power.
These interventions go beyond improving price realisation. They enable women smallholders to develop negotiation skills, deepen their understanding of market dynamics and increasingly adopt market-led production practices. The resulting market linkages also strengthen the role of PGs and FPOs in coordinating production, aggregation and marketing at the grassroots level.
With the existence of a functional and effective FPO at the block/multi block level, the programme now focuses on further strengthening and institutionalising this market ecosystem through FPO-led business development, buyer engagement and collective marketing. This transition provides smallholders with a stronger institutional identity, improves the sustainability of market linkages and helps establish an efficient, competitive and women-led agricultural marketing system.
